FAQs

Is a heat pump the right choice? Here are the most frequently asked questions from homeowners.

Do heat pumps work in Canada? In cold winters?

Yes, modern heat pumps are designed for Canadian winters. They operate like air conditioners that can both heat and cool.

Even cold air has energy-- so heat pumps keep you comfortable when it's -30°C outside. Backup heating is included in every project.

From my discussions with homeowners, I’ve realized that most questions about heat pump come down to one concern: Will a heat pump be an effective, reliable heat source for me?

Yes, heat pumps provide remarkable benefits to homeowners because they can be properly sized to load match throughout the year. They're a great fit for most homes in Canada.

Do I need a heat pump or a gas furnace?

The short answer: it depends.

Heat pumps can be installed in most houses—but our goal isn't to install a heat pump in every house, we use heat pumps as a tool to achieve remarkable results for homeowners.

Most houses are 'heat pump ready' or 'nearly ready' based on the performance-based heat load calculation and underlying problems. Other houses are categorized as 'needs work', which are a better fit for hybrid (dual fuel) systems that use a heat pump with a backup furnace.

What heat pump size do I need in Toronto?

Contractors should complete performance-based heat load calculations (based on gas usage) before sizing equipment.

The standard HVAC method includes "rule of thumb" estimates, but those are just guesses. We run the numbers on every project.

Foundry takes heat load calculations very seriously. It's impossible to right-size HVAC equipment if you don't complete a performance-based heat load calculation to assess the heating and cooling requirements for the house.

This step is skipped by traditional HVAC contractors, but it's mandatory on every Foundry project.

Do you offer ongoing service plans and maintenance?

We don't recommend service agreements and maintenance contractors on heat pumps. Annual maintenance is required on gas furnaces to reduce the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning and gas leaks.

Heat pumps have no combustion. If a heat pump is installed properly, the only maintenance steps are filter changes and removing debris from the outdoor unit. These are both simple DIY tasks for homeowners.

On Foundry projects, we don't offer annual maintenance agreements because there's limited for us to deliver. We're here if there are any issues, so homeowners can enjoy their high-performance system and save money on maintenance.

Do you help with rebate and loan programs?

Foundry Heat Pump is an approved contractor in the Home Renovation Savings program. We'll walk you through the rebate process, including expected timelines, eligibility requirements, and rebate amounts.

Drew Tozer is an NRCan-registered energy advisor, which gives him early access to news and upcoming changes to rebate and loan programs.

How much does a heat pump cost in Ontario?

Costs range from $10,000 to $30,000 to replace a furnace and AC with an electric heat pump in Ontario. The biggest variables are contractor quality and equipment choice.

Foundry installs premium Mitsubishi and Fujitsu heat pumps with skilled heat pump installers. As heat pump specialists, we deliver results that traditional "jack of all trades" HVAC contractors can't match.

A typical Foundry project costs $20,000 - $25,000, but we can refer homeowners to contractors with prices closer to $10,000. Reach out and we'll connect you.

What warranties or guarantees do you offer?

Foundry Heat Pumps stands behind its high-quality workmanship with a best-in-class 10-year parts, 10-year labour, and 10-year compressor warranties on most electric heat pump installations.
