The smallest gas furnace on its lowest setting is still too big for the average house.
Heat pumps are the only system that can be properly sized to match the needs of the house.
1. Assess
Foundry completes a performance-based heat load calculation to understand the current state of the house. Are there other considerations like old ductwork or a small electrical panel that will impact our recommendation?
2. Plan.
We discuss needs and goals of the homeowner to find the right solution that's within budget. What problems are we trying to solve, and how we can use a right-sized heat pump to help?
3. Implement.
All of Foundry's technicians have 10,000+ hours of experience with heat pumps, and we offer best-in-class warranties to back it up.
01
Build quality
Fujitsu and Mitsubishi heat pumps are manufactured in Japan. They have full control over development and manufacturing, ensuring premium components and best-in-class build quality.
By contrast, most 'budget brands' are made in China by third party manufacturers. The equipment is shipped to North America and white-labelled under domestic brands.
02
Reliability
Fujitsu and Mitsubishi are considered the gold standard for cold-climate heat pumps. They are among the original innovators of modern heat pumps.
That track record of reliability and field-tested durability proves that Fujitsu and Mitsubishi heat pumps last. Budget brands haven't been in the field for long enough to understand and fix common failure points.
03
Noise
In addition to a long track record of premium build quality, reliability, and cold weather performance, Fujitsu and Mitsubishi heat pumps have a reputation as one of the quietest brands available.
Fujitsu and Mitsubishi are rated for 53 dB outdoors — the budget brands are more than twice as loud at 64 dB. Fujitsu and Mitsubishi can be installed closer to living spaces without interrupting your family or neighbours.
Yes, modern heat pumps are designed for Canadian winters. They operate like air conditioners that can both heat and cool.
Even cold air has energy-- so heat pumps keep you comfortable when it's -30°C outside. Backup heating is included in every project.
From my discussions with homeowners, I’ve realized that most questions about heat pump come down to one concern: Will a heat pump be an effective, reliable heat source for me?
Yes, heat pumps provide remarkable benefits to homeowners because they can be properly sized to load match throughout the year. They're a great fit for most homes in Canada.
The short answer: it depends.
Heat pumps can be installed in most houses—but our goal isn't to install a heat pump in every house, we use heat pumps as a tool to achieve remarkable results for homeowners.
Most houses are 'heat pump ready' or 'nearly ready' based on the performance-based heat load calculation and underlying problems. Other houses are categorized as 'needs work', which are a better fit for hybrid (dual fuel) systems that use a heat pump with a backup furnace.
Contractors should complete performance-based heat load calculations (based on gas usage) before sizing equipment.
The standard HVAC method includes "rule of thumb" estimates, but those are just guesses. We run the numbers on every project.
Foundry takes heat load calculations very seriously. It's impossible to right-size HVAC equipment if you don't complete a performance-based heat load calculation to assess the heating and cooling requirements for the house.
This step is skipped by traditional HVAC contractors, but it's mandatory on every Foundry project.
We don't recommend service agreements and maintenance contractors on heat pumps. Annual maintenance is required on gas furnaces to reduce the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning and gas leaks.
Heat pumps have no combustion. If a heat pump is installed properly, the only maintenance steps are filter changes and removing debris from the outdoor unit. These are both simple DIY tasks for homeowners.
On Foundry projects, we don't offer annual maintenance agreements because there's limited for us to deliver. We're here if there are any issues, so homeowners can enjoy their high-performance system and save money on maintenance.
