So what's right for my house?
It depends on the house. Most homes in Canada require 2-3 tons of heating and cooling but large or complex houses can be 10 tons or more.
Residential heat pumps range from 1 to 4 tons and the most common gas furnaces are 5 to 10 tons. They don't make gas furnaces small enough to be the right size for an average house in Canada.
For most homes, right-sized HVAC requires a heat pump. And for larger houses, a heat pump can be installed with a backup furnace to get the benefits of a heat pump with the higher capacity of a furnace.
